Hortensia De la Torre at the age of 83 passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at her home with her husband by her side. She was born in Havana, Cuba on February 6, 1935. She was an only child and was loved by her mom and aunties a great deal. On April 21, 1960, she married Jorge De la Torre. Together, they had four children: Maria Teresa, Maria Victoria, Miguel Angel and Jorge Nicolas. She also has seven grandchildren: Jorge, Victoria, Veronica, David, Billy, Sofia and Julianna as well as three great grandchildren: Jack, Alex and Molly. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Hortensia was a school teacher who made a difference in many children’s lives. She made learning fun and relevant. Her children were lucky to have a teacher for a mom and as a result, they attended school with her for most of their childhoods. Hortensia loved to sing, and our home was filled with music. She often sang for guests. Everyone loved to listen to her. She also enjoyed traveling and visited many countries in Europe, South America, China, Canada as well as many states in America. On November 3, 2001, with her husband’s support, she was ordained as the Rev. Yin Zhi Shakya at the Temple Hsu Yun in Honolulu. There she began her love and passion for Buddha. She authored two books, titled Lo Relativo y lo Absoluto and El Sutra de Hui-Neng. She has translated to Spanish many important documents. Her translations and writing have impacted countless lives. We were lucky to have her in our lives. She will be missed by all of us.
